HISTORY:

Target Field, named after one of America's largest retailers, replaced the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome as the home of the Twins in 2010. Built at a cost approaching $545 million, the stadium is the end result of a decade-long battle to replace the Metrodome as the franchise overcame talks of contraction and relocation. The new stadium was approved by the Minnesota state legislature in May 2006. Located in the downtown Warehouse District, Target Field is an open-air grass stadium, marking the first time the Twins will play outdoor games at home since 1981 at Metropolitan Stadium, which was replaced by the Mall of America. According to the team's Web site, the stadium's exterior "is a modern interpretation of the state's natural creations" and features Minnesota limestone, native trees and other flora.

Soak up the scene:

Target Plaza, the gateway to the stadium, features statues of Kirby Puckett, Rod Carew, Tony Oliva and Harmon Killebrew, in addition to a 1,500-pound Gold Glove that pays tribute to the team's commitment to solid defense. After each Twins home run, the team's original "Shaking Hands" logo, with characters Minnie and Paul, will light up in center field. The stadium also affords views of the downtown skyline. Concourses are twice as wide as the Metrodome's -- 44 feet compared with 22.

Directions:

From the east: Take I-94W and exit on Olson Memorial Highway (Highway 55). Turn right (East) after exiting then right onto North Seventh Street (Highway 55). Target Field will be on the left. From the west: Take I-394E and exit on either Sixth Street North or Fourth Street North. Ample parking will be available in surface lots. From the north: Take I-35S and follow I-35W at the divide. Merge onto I-94W and exit on Olson Memorial Highway (Highway 55). Turn right (East) after exiting then another right onto North Seventh Street (Highway 55). Target Field will be on your left. From the south: Take I-35N and follow I-35W at the divide. Take the downtown exit and follow once it turns into Fifth Avenue South. Turn left at Seventh Street South. Target Field will be just beyond the Target Center and numerous parking ramps. From the northwest: Take I-94E and exit on Olson Memorial Highway (Highway 55). Turn left (East) after exiting then another right onto North Seventh Street (Highway 55). Target Field will be on your left. From the southwest: Take 169N to I-394 East. Exit on either Sixth Street North or Fourth Street North. Ample parking will be available in surface lots.

Parking:

Fans are encouraged to take advantage of parking structures, team officials said. More than 20,000 parking spaces will be available within five blocks of Target Field. A, B and C parking ramps will also be utilized, with nearly 8,000 parking spots.

Transportation:

The Hiawatha light rail and Northstar commuter rail will offer routes to the Target Field. Multiple bus routes also stop near Target Field. Additionally, 300 spaces will be available for bikes.
